inspired by the view

While looking through the photos of this quilt, I found this image which has me wondering if the reason I've been drawn to lots of low-volume and pink fabrics lately is because those beautiful pink flowers are the main view outside my window.  This also might explain why my new favorite quilting design is flowers.

I had initially pulled these fabrics to make cushion covers but then quickly realized that this was not the right palette for the intended purpose.  However, I really liked these fabrics together so I made a quick quilt using a similar method to the one I described here except I offset the strips.

My original quilting plan was spirals at the edges of each patchwork block.  I finished the first spiral fine but while quilting the second spiral, I somehow started making it a flower instead (possibly because of the reason I wrote above?!?!)  I actually thought it looked good while I was in the process of quilting so I finished the quilt with more flowers and some large loops and used some flea market fancy for the binding.  The next morning I took the quilt out to show my family and immediately realized that I did not like the spirals AT ALL!  My husband and daughters tried to convince me it looked "fine" but I did not even kind of agree.

So, despite this being a completely finished (but not yet washed) quilt, I unpicked the one big spiral and replaced it with a giant flower design.  I don't think I would necessarily recommend doing this but it actually worked out okay this time.  As you can see in the above photo, I did leave in the little spiral which I wish I had also unpicked but oh, well.  Fortunately, this quilt will be one that lives in my house with my daughters who are happy to overlook any and all imperfections (which, if you saw any of my quilts up close, you would know is a good thing!)

  6. I love the soft colours of the quilt. I think it looks great and I confess I can not see the spiral anyway! I am always inspired by whatever is left out on my desk so that gives me a great excuse not to tidy it up!

  11. I've been drawn to softer colors too lately. Having once unpicked about 1/4 of a quilt's worth of quilting, I can sympathize with your plight. But the result looks great and I say it's worth it to have something you're happy with.

  12. It is pretty :) if I were inspired by the view I'd have really bright reddish orange and paint box green with white. Our poppies against our white fence.

  13. It looks great! I love the flower petals. I am always so anxious about quilting anything because I am afraid I will choose the wrong pattern. I've spent hours picking out quilting before and it is NOT fun!

  15. Beautiful quilt! I know the feeling of not liking how quilting is working on my quilt and then picking it apart. Been there done that. You did a beautiful job though I love the flower design!

  16. I think the quilt is very pretty! It's very modern yet feminine too. I've done quite a few spiral fmq and if I don't mark anything, they are so dense that they make the quilt kind of hard in that spot. I like quilted flowers too.

  22. So fresh and pretty! I think sometimes we're so hard on ourselves if what we envisage doesn't quite work out. I think the quilting is perfect and the colours remind me of your whole blog design- simple and fresh yet sophisticated.

  23. I really love this quilt. The spiral flower quilting looks really great! I know it's hard to see things that you aren't happy with in a finished quilt, but I really think it looks great.

  30. good for you for unpicking something you really didn't like. it's always worth it to not hate looking at it every time you see the quilt. i love the off-set, scrappy look of this quilt! and the color-palette, too.

  31. Aren't we always our own worst critics? We notice the little things that other never will. I agree with your family! It is a lovely quilt and you 'learned' how much you like to quilt flowers!

  32. scrappy quilts need scrappy backs. It looks wonderful. I have finally jumped into FMQ and you should see some of mine. I am new to this blogging thing so don't have much up yet, but all of my quilt sandwiches ended up as hot pads and they are wild. It's FMQ because you are free to quilt whatever, right? I love to FMQ when I am upset or angry. Ahh, you should see some of that FMQ. LOL. Love your stuff. Proud of you for sharing. I Love the "mistakes".
