Today's advice for new bloggers is from Lynne of Lily's Quilts. If Lily's Quilts is not already on your inspiration blogroll, I highly recommend it - she makes beautiful quilts and has several great tutorials. And Lynne's blog also holds a special place in my blogging heart and I think many of yours as well for her monthly Small Blog Meet. It is the first of every month and is a place for blogs with under 50 readers to link up and meet other small bloggers. This is how I met many of the new bloggers in the hop including many of my best blogging friends - you know who you are! Click here to read her advice for us.
Week 4 Calendar:

Other ways to keep up and participate in the Blog Hop:
1. Follow me on Twitter.
2. Join and post on the Let's Get Acquainted! Flickr Group
What is this - a new button??? Well, since we are learning all these great tips from the bloggers in the advice series, here is my motivation to put those tips and ideas into action. Each week I'll pick one or two items to highlight here. If you have any ideas you'd like to see, let me know. Or if you'd like to host a Let's Figure it out Together post on your blog, that would be great too. Topics: setting up social media for our blogs, blog design (adding buttons, pages, headers, post dividers, backgrounds, and more), and photography among others that come up along the way.
For this week:
1. Let's all be 100% positive that we are NOT a No-Reply Blogger. Here are some tutorials here and here. Interestingly, it was Lynne from Lily's Quilts who let me know I was a no-reply blogger when I first linked up to the small blog meet.
2. Join Twitter. Why?
- great way to promote your blog posts
- find out about special fabric sales and promotions
- keep up with your favorite bloggers
- communicate with your followers when you don't want to publish a whole post
- retweets - share great posts written by you or others with your followers who can share with their followers who can share with their followers . . .
As with everything blog hop related, this is open to all bloggers with stops on the hop and any of our readers AND no rules - no pressure to participate - totally up to you how little or how much you want to get involved with this.
If you would like to participate, confirm that you are a blogger that can receive replies to your comments and set up a Twitter account. You can follow me on Twitter here (I'll be sure to follow you back) and then you can use this week's link up to let us know you are on twitter - just put Twitter: your blog or twitter name (in addition to linking up your post.) Next week: Flickr.
To enter, all you need to do is leave a comment on this post. Leave any comment you want to enter but if you'd like a topic, how about your suggestions for topics for the Let's Figure It out Together posts. One comment per person for an entry (replies to other comments don't count so reply all you want!) The giveaway will be open until Friday, June 15th at 8pm EDT and a winner will be chosen at random. And, PLEASE, leave an email unless you are sure that you are not a no-reply blogger. The winner will be announced in the Week 5 Blog Hop News on Monday, June 18th.
Last week's winner of the premade blog design by Jennie from Clover and Violet is LeslieJune 4, 2012 2:31 PM who said: "Wonderful words of advice, I especially love the line about bribing ::giggle::"
Anyone participating in or following along with the blog hop can add a link. Please either post the button or a text link somewhere in your post or on your blog and please visit (at the very least) the person who links up right before you and leave a comment!
I love that you are doing this - I think you should make it an annual event, it's just brilliant.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice--thanks!
ReplyDeleteI think you are building real momentum with the blog hop and it is so nice to see new blogs that we might not have found otherwise. Good for us and for new bloggers all round!
ReplyDeleteHi there, I didn't realize that I was a no reply blogger until someone took the time to find me via my blog and let me know. I had a LOT of trouble getting this resolved because I had upgraded to Google+ and none of the tutes could help. I finally found out that under the gear symbol you can revert to the "old interface" and from there you can follow directions to fix your no-reply status.
ReplyDeleteLynne is being a superstar with her new blogger advice - perfect for a blogging dimwit like me! I would love to sign up for your blog hop and I will send you an email shortly. Thank you for the advice and support - it is very much appreciated! Gertie xxx
ReplyDeleteI would love to enter the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much.
xxxx
Your blog hop looks a lot of fun! With all the help and support available I might yet pluck up the nerve to start blogging myself - maybe :)
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, I look forward to reading some new blogs.
Thanks for the giveaway - I love the Intrepid Thread.
Thanks for all the blogging advice. I'm considering the jump into the blogging world and this really is helpful!!
ReplyDeleteMmm yummy fabric or what?????
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing me to some great new blogs!
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing the Advice for New Bloggers series - it's very helpful. Let's Figure it Out Together is a great idea too.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice!
ReplyDeleteBeing a new blogger myself, these posts have been incredibly helpful. I've learned that bloggers using Wordpress tend to be no-reply bloggers by default, so I've got to start leaving my email in comments more.
ReplyDeleteI would love to figure out how to make those little linky button widgets thingies. Do you know which ones I'm talking about? I figured out how to get someone else's and stick it on my blog, but I want to know how to make one myself in the first place.
beaniekins84(at)gmail.com
I didn't know I was a no reply blogger until I had entered a bajillion giveaways 2 SMS giveaway days ago. Thankfully the queen bee from my first flickr bee let me know.
ReplyDeleteThis blog hop is a LOT of fun. Thanks for putting it all together!
I am so excited that we are going to talking about Flickr next week. I was just thinking that was something I need to learn.
ReplyDeleteHi Beth, I'd like to figure out how to make a button for my blog. I'm OK with the design part since I'd use a picture of something I made in the past, I just don't know how to create it, how to do the HTML coding part, etc. I read some stuff in someone's blog (can't remember who),but was not step-by-step so the steps she was skipping were the ones that wasn't obvious to me. I've only been blogging the last 5 months and haven't even read or followed blogs before that so I'm pretty sure I have a lot to learn... Thank you for the giveaway opportunity!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice over on Lily's blog! I use Flickr so i'll be looking forward to next weeks post on it =D
ReplyDeleteLast day to enter my giveaway. If you haven't entered already today is your last chance =D
http://ibescheraldine.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/official-150th-post-giveaway.html
I love the advice and Intrepid Thread. I love the shop and I love getting my purchases from them. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI just read Lynne's advice on Lily's Quilts, really helpful and simple. I still can't imagine myself joining Twitter, but I'm going to look into all the other tips she gave us. And I'm going back through your list of contributors to catch up!
ReplyDeleteLove that fabric! Also, love Lily's Quilts.
ReplyDeleteI love Lynne at Liily's Quilts. I believe she was one of the first blogs I started following. I love all the blogging tips and the new blogs out there. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteAmy
Sew Incredibly CrAzY
I have been reading Lilys quilts blog for a while. I love these how to blog posts! I am even learning a few things although I have been blogging for quite a while. (longer than I have been quilting, as a matter of fact.) I started blogging in 2006, but I didn't start quilting until 2008. Ha ha...now my blog is more quilting than anything.
ReplyDeleteBeth, you're doing great things in blogland with this hop...such an inspiration to me and so many others. Loved Lynne's post today too. You're amazing!!
ReplyDeleteI just read Lynne's great advice.
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting this blog hop, you sure have put in a lot of work!
Great advice from Lynne. This is a great idea for a series! www.paperstarfish.prettyposies.com
ReplyDeleteI love this bog hop - thank you for letting me be a part of it! It just gets better and better!! All the hard work you are doing to introduce us to each other and as a bonus we get to learn new skills -> awesome!! Blogging quilters are so supportive and helpful ;) Great giveaway too!!!
ReplyDeleteLynne has so many great tips for blogging - I was surprised to see how many people are still "no-reply bloggers" during the recent SMS giveaway day!
ReplyDeleteI am loving this blog hop. The advice for new bloggers AND visiting the new blogs has been wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI think I found your blog via Clover and Violet last week and I'm loving these posts. I just started using my blog again. I've just taken up sewing and quilting, but I also crochet and make greeting cards.
ReplyDeleteI sure picked the right time to start blogging - it's been about a month now and your series have really been a great help! :D
ReplyDeleteI have joined Twitter, but don't feel comfortable on it. It feels like a party where everyone is in groups talking in different conversations, and I'm in the middle of all the chaos, not knowing enough about any of the conversations to join in.
ReplyDeleteI can't start a blog right now, but since I enjoy them so much it's nice to learn more about how it's all done. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Glad I found this through Lily's Quilts.
ReplyDeleteWonderful advice from Lynne. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet decided if I'm interested in writing my own blog or not, but I'm definitely interested in what info people might share in this hop! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteHow about if we figure out how to join the beginning and ending of our binding on the bias. There has got to be a trick for that, mine looks great sometimes and terribleother times.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving this blog hop series! I'm a new blogger (six months), and I've discovered that there are a lot of us new bloggers out there (and finding lots of new blogs to read as well)! I love all the blogging advice, and would love to see some technical instruction, because I find myself a little lost still sometimes as far as all that goes!
ReplyDeleteThis is so much work! You are doing a spectacular job! :) Thank you for all that you are doing!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this hop that you have put together! It has given me so many great ideas on how to be a better blogger!!!! Thank you! I do have a suggestion for a topic. I see so many great blog headers and buttons, but I'm soooo not computer/electronically savvy, so I have NO IDEA how to even begin making a header for my blog. It would be great to see some tips & tricks on how to make your blog pretty, w/ backgrounds, headers, and buttons!!!! Thanks for letting me enter the giveaway! You announce the winner on my bday so I may just get lucky!!! :)
ReplyDeleteYou rock, Beth! The blog hop is brilliant - I'm loving all the new blogs I've found!
ReplyDeleteThis Hop Rocks! I would be happy to write a Blog Design Tips post, need a week or so though, its crazy right now haha. I will let you know when I have something for you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the links on how to make sure you aren't a no-reply blogger! I've been worrying about that for some time now.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for the Let's Figure it Out Together strand, I have just managed to add numbers to my comments thanks to your recent post!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a blogger myself, but I read and follow quite a few blogs for inspiration! Lots of great people out there! Found your blog through "Lily's Quilt". Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDelete:o) aseostebo(at)hotmail(dot)com
This series is very useful. I just started a blog to document my learning-to-quilt process, so it's perfect timing for me! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou are really doing so much to bring people together, it's fab! And thanks for the latest series. Love the fabrics and the chance to win. Thank you :-)
ReplyDelete100% positive here even though the builders have just moved in!
ReplyDeleteJust found you via Lynne, loving it so far xx
I am loving your series for bloggers. I wish I had had all this information and encouragement when I started a little over a year ago. I have learned some things slowly, but one thing I have learned is that if you ask bloggers a question, they are very happy to help you out with the answers you need. So ask questions if you are new at this. And those are such beautiful fabrics! I was not familiar with them, but am now. See, another thing I learned from blogging!
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing me to new blogs and love the Advice for New Bloggers series. You've done a great job coming up with these brilliant ideas! Well done, Beth!
ReplyDeleteLove all of this, I've been thinking of starting a blog so it's all very helpful. Great giveaway too!
ReplyDeleteAre all Wordpress accounts No Reply Bloggers. I think we are.... What are WE to do?
ReplyDeleteAnd I LOVE that bloggers are being encouraging to disable their word verifications!!! It will make commented so much easier!
loritfrench at comcast dot net
I love The Intrepid Thread - they have such great customer service!
ReplyDeleteYou are doing such a great job on this blog hop! Definitely a good idea for everyone to make sure they are not a no-reply blogger! I am awful about checking and I get a little sad when I write a reply and I realize I can't send it :D.
ReplyDeleteAnother question. Don't use this one as a giveaway entry, LOL!
ReplyDeleteFrom WP when I reply to a Blogger, my message goes directly under their comment on my blog, straight from my email notification. Do they get a notification that I replied? Or do I need to copy and paste their email from their reply to reply to their inbox directly? Then it's not attached to the comment so they probably have no clue who I am or what I'm talking about. I want to be polite and reply but I'm not sure if they are getting them. Any help, appreciated!
loritfrench@comcast.net
DeleteBlog hops are especially nice!
ReplyDeleteI like to see new blogs and find new topics, patterns, tutorials and tons of inspiration!
Love Intrepid Thread....I want to learn why I am so darn afraid to practice my FMQ ...I want to learn this so bad!! Yet I will avoid it at all cost. Thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteNice fabric! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteJust found this series through Lily's Quilts, looking forward to reading more.
ReplyDeleteCame over here from Lily's blog, love your site, I am your newest follower now.
ReplyDeleteC_kaminsky at yahoo dot com
What a great blog hop idea!
ReplyDeleteLove Julie at Intrepid Thread - she is such a giving person and wonderful to deal with. I read somewhere that you should never reverse your machine when you are using a walking foot - is this true?
ReplyDeleteTwitter scares me!!
ReplyDeleteLove Julie at the Intrepid Thread. :)
What a fantastic giveaway! I don't blog yet, but I'm thinking about it....
ReplyDeleteI am not tweeting, so I will just leave a comment. Came over from Julie's blog page. Great idea to have an on-line blogger "mixer". Thanks!

"Anne" left this comment on Lynne's post, and this is something I would love to see addressed:
ReplyDelete"I loved your post, thanks so much! I do have a question though about responding to people's comments. Is it the general practice in quilt blogs to respond via email or on the post itself? I've just been doing both so the blog shows that we respond, but I know people don't generally come back to check for responses so email works better. Is there some standard or is it everyone makes it up as they go? :)"
I found your blog on the Intrepid Thread blog - and I'm signing up to follow you. There's SO much good info here!
ReplyDeleteI've had a blog for about 3 years, but there's a lot more I could do with it. I'm going to try some of the advice from Lynne - can't wait to get started!
Thanks for the great giveaway!! :) And the advice.
ReplyDeletewoohoo great giveaway! thanks!
ReplyDeleteI found your blog through The Intrepid Thread and it looks like you have lots of good info. I don't have a blog yet, but now I know a great source of advice if I should start one! Thanks for offering this giveaway -- Flying Free is my new favorite fabric line and I would SO love to win. Thanks for the chance!

ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway and wonderful advice!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for coordinating this hop and giveaway. I'm hoping to learn a lot!
ReplyDeleteI love intrepid thread, they have great stuff and are so fast getting it out to me!
ReplyDeleteI would love to know how to make a button with html code so people can grab me (that doesn't sound like I intended). It would be lovely if the tutorial could include how/where to get great images for the buttons.
Thank you so much for setting up this blog hop for us! It has inspired me to re-start my blog.
ReplyDeleteI know your posts are helping lots of newbie bloggers out there. Thanks for taking the time to do this. And thank you, and Julie from Intrepid Thread, for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteThis blog hop is so fun (and so is a giveaway!)
ReplyDeleteI am really loving this series! Julie is fabulous to sponsor such a generous giveaway! A good topic might be how to not stress out about your blog and how to keep it fun for you (the author)
ReplyDeleteI just have a tiny blog but this info will help in the future if I want to grow it. Love the fabric btw.
ReplyDeleteI love this new line! Thanks for the opportunity!

I've been thinking about blogging for so long, but honestly, I don't know where you gals find the time! I've been doing pinterest and having a blast with that. Who knows, maybe if I can get more organized! In the mean time, I just love to blog hop and get inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI think tutorials about the technical side of blogging are always helpful. It's nice to pick up a new skill and make your blog look fantastic at the same time. :)
ReplyDeleteI think I would benefit from help and advice about anything blog wise, so this is terrific! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great idea - I dont have a blog, but I like ones that are easy to follow - newsletter - pinterest info or facebook - don't do twitter much.
ReplyDeletegreat advice and blogpost! thanks!
ReplyDeletelove that fabric thanks for the giveaway
ReplyDeletesuch great advice you are giving us and such precious links!
ReplyDeletethank you

ReplyDeleteWonderful giveaway...you've been quite busy!
ReplyDeleteBoppiesgirl@gmaio.com
Fun giveaway of gorgeous fabrics!
ReplyDeletewould love to be in the giveaway. I admit I rarely use twitter - it confuses me. and I feel like who actually reads alllll those staus updates from all the people they follow.
ReplyDeleteThis is a brilliant idea! Though, I kind of have to agree with Jen above me... I have a Twitter account, but keeping up with tweets (even though I only follow a handful of people) is tricky! Thanks for the giveaway, too. :)
ReplyDeleteThose fabrics are so pretty. I love the colours.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant idea, I will be following along and attempting to improve my blog!! x
ReplyDeleteGreat fabric.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a really long time to figure out I was a no-reply blogger. It seems silly that they wouldn't have the default be the opposite of what it is. It is not obvious when you are setting up an account that this is an option. As I added more blogs to my reading list I started to notice the warning "no-reply" comments and I finally checked. I think it is great that some authors remind people as I don't think newbies would even notice. I just thought people were ignoring my questions and comments.
ReplyDeleteI'm just learning about twitter, but I think I'm following you campnanaandpapa
ReplyDeleteThank you for doing this. I have been toying with the idea of starting my own blog and am so glad to have found this hop. I read about it over at Lynne's blog, so now I'm playing catch-up tonight and reading the previous posts. Wonderful work!
ReplyDeleteHi, Beth! I just tried to respond to your weekly e-mail and got an error message saying my e-mail to you is undeliverable. Do you have another e-mail address you use that you could send me so I can re-send my e-mail to you? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any suggestions - I am a pretty new blogger myself so I have found some interesting information though in the discussions. Thank you very much for the giveaway, I just love Intrepid Thread.
ReplyDeleteI have a blog, but haven't done anything with it for months and months. I'd like to get back into it, but we don't have the Internet on the computer anymore, only my iPhone. I find it too time consuming and painful trying to do it on my mobile. I suppose my question would be, does anyone blog from there phone, and do they have any tips in doing so?
ReplyDeleteI love reading all these blogs. I too am thinking of starting a new blog - love the inspiration and ideas.
ReplyDeleteGreat fabric! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeletegreat great advice!! Also thanks for the chance for the giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the posts - I'll follow you now. I found you through Julie at the Intrepid Thread. I don't think I have any followers and am new to blogging, so I'm grateful for the help.
ReplyDeleteSo fun, reading all the blogs linking up and those on the hop! I may have never found some of the! Thanks for hosting, and love the fabric giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI've really enjoyed the blog hop so far, it's a terrific way to find new bloggers. Thanks for the blog hop & for the chance to win these lovely fabrics.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so excited about the Let's Figure it out together thing! I have something I need help figuring out!! Okay, so you know the mosaic things where people have a bunch of pictures where typically only one would fit and then there is a link list to match up with the picture? How the heck do I do that? Thanks for hosting the hop!
ReplyDeleteGreat bundle! I am always needing new fabric to add to my stash. It's on the little side right now. :( Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI love the intrepid thread - Julie is so nice and that is how I came over here. I love finding new blogs to read and new ideas. thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! I follow Julie and am also in the Stash Bee with her:)
ReplyDeleteGreat advice and what a wonderful giveaway!
ReplyDeleteThank you for a wonderful giveaway of lovely fabric! awolk at rogers dot com
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think we're too connected, you know? Do I really need twitter as well as facebook and email to stay in touch? But certainly I love my evening me-time when I catch up on my blog reading!
ReplyDeleteI just found your site! I think it's great and I look forward to checking it all out! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the chance at these beautiful fabrics!
ReplyDeleteII just found your site and am enjoying all of the information about blogging.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a blogger but I do read lots of blogs. Love, love, love the fabric & would love to win it! Thanks to you & Julie for the chance.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great advice. I think I am NOT a no-reply blogger, but just in case it's kmcassie at gmail dot com . You have ALMOST turned me into a blogger. I'd love to see some tips on selecting a name for a blog. Are there any legal ramifications we should consider in developing a blog? Which blog platform is the best or the strengths and weaknesses of various platforms? Finally, should we allow the blog platform to post advertisements on our blog or should we hustle them up ourselves?
ReplyDeleteBtw...the fabric is Gorg! As in gorgeous!
Oh and could someone explain the google blogroll? I have a google email account, but when I join the blogroll it doesn't automatically send me emails with new posts. How does google blogroll work?

The no -reply blogger thing is a recurrent problem, it seems you can turn that bit off and it pops back up a couple of months later. Computers with minds of their own!

ReplyDeleteReally enjoying this blogging series! It's how I found this blog :)
ReplyDeleteHi Beth. Thanks for more great advice. I am now following you on Twitter. I have an account, but have to admit, I don't really know how to tweet. I need a twitter book for dummies!!
